A courtyard is a circumscribed area, often surrounded by buildings, that is open to the sky. In the organization of public spaces in relation to the private domain the courtyard plays a prominent role. It identifies the city where its located. Nowadays as much as in the past or in the future. In VELP the courtyard organizes the surrounding buildings of the HealthCare into an ensemble where the whole is much more than just the sum of the individual parts. All the courts, patios and porches of Velp are entwined with the courtyard. The porch connects the individual buildings with the courtyard. The four gatekeepers (two at the street and two at the courtyard) make the entrance and inform the public that there is something of interest behind them. It invites them to come.
